Drainage and floodplains are regulated separately under two different legal authorities and two different agencies. Drainage deals with washes and flooding generally less than 50 cubic feet per second (cfs) as well as areas currently not under study. Because of these differences the regulatory standards set by each are different. All unincorporated Maricopa County permits are initiated at the One Stop Shop located at the Planning & Development Department. If the determination is made that no "known" washes greater than 50 cfs (based on 100-year event discharge) exist on a parcel, the Drainage Department will complete the review process without the aid of the Flood Control District.
Should any portion of a project involve existing or pending floodplain, it will be important to adhere to regulations outlined in Floodplain Regulations for Maricopa County (Revised 2006). Additionally, for individual residential lots, applications must be based on: AZ State Standard SS6-05.
