Maricopa County Steps Up Again To Assist Local Nonprofits

Business

Human services-centered nonprofit organizations across Maricopa County are getting a financial boost thanks to a new investment approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Human services-centered nonprofit organizations across Maricopa County are getting a financial boost thanks to a new investment approved by the Board of Supervisors.  The Board approved nearly $14 million in grants to 82 nonprofits (listed below) serving residents throughout the region.  The organizations receiving money are trusted community partners who provide a wide variety of social services that help kids, at-risk adults, individuals with special needs, and seniors with food, shelter, clothing, health and mental health needs, and other critical support.

“During the course of this pandemic, we’ve seen individuals and families who’ve never sought public assistance before in need of it now.  What these grants do is allow us to help the helpers, to get additional resources to the organizations who can provide that meal, or that safe space, or that connection that will allow someone to improve their situation,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates, District 3.  “Maricopa County is proud to partner with these trusted nonprofits to ensure they are able to meet the unique needs of this time.”

The grants are funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), the federal legislation meant to help individuals, families and businesses recover from the effects of the pandemic. Maricopa County has been a regional leader in this space.

A similar, successful program implemented by the Board of Supervisors in 2020 used CARES Act funds to assist 69 local nonprofits.

"Not only does this funding to human services nonprofits further their mission to directly support the well-being of the community, it ensures that our neighbors who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic have trusted, reliable places to seek the specialized support they need to thrive," said Jacqueline Edwards, Director of Maricopa County's Human Services Department, which administered the grantmaking process for the County.

How Maricopa County Is Using Federal Funds

To ensure that ARPA funding awarded to Maricopa County is distributed equitably to the people who need it most, the Board of Supervisors approved spending priorities that include:

  • Continued public health response, with dollars allocated to new health clinics and vaccine availability and education for all
  • Affordable housing and home repairs as inexpensive housing is in short supply
  • Workforce support
  • Rent and mortgage assistance
  • Homelessness prevention and mitigation
  • Small/micro-sized business and nonprofit assistance
  • Behavioral health and addiction recovery
  • Services for seniors and people with disabilities
  • Support for people impacted by domestic violence

Spending can be tracked on a public dashboard at Maricopa.gov/RescueFunds.  To view and access all currently available support programs for Maricopa County residents and businesses, visit Maricopa.gov/Rescue.
