Phoenix – Maricopa County Supervisor Steve Gallardo is hoping his recent award from an Arizona non-profit will encourage more community members to mentor youth.  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona recognized Gallardo as “Big Brother of the Year” in 2020.  He has been involved with the group for more than seven years

“When I was introduced to this organization in 2012, my first reaction was ‘I don’t have time,’” said Supervisor Gallardo, District 5. “But I made time and met my Little Brother Jesus who I still spend time with. He helps me coach baseball in the neighborhood.”

Supervisor Gallardo was State Senator Gallardo at that time. He has always been deeply involved in the communities of Southwest Phoenix and beyond. He has tried to teach Jesus about the power of community by first coaching his baseball team and now taking him to political and community events.

“Jesus is 17 years old now. We have gone from talking Pokemon to policy,” said Gallardo. “He is the reason I became a coach because it was something fun we could do together.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona presented Supervisor Gallardo with the award at The Big Event at their headquarters on January 30, 2020. The organization has more than 1,000 volunteers and always needs more male volunteers to match with boys in the community. They ask adults to commit to a few hours a month over a year to build a bond with their little brother or sister.

“We are all busy,” said Gallardo. “But making time for these kids who need our help through Big Brothers Big Sisters is something you will never regret.  I thank the organization for recognizing me and the other volunteers who donate their precious time.”
